Unlike in other assembly polls held in the recent past, the elections to the 224 assembly seats in Karnataka have been less enthusiastic except for the "Thrimurthis of Karnataka" - Congress, BJP and JDS.
The state, for long has not seen the strong governance, thanks to the fractured verdict given by the people of Karnataka.
The state, for long has not seen the strong governance, thanks to the fractured verdict given by the people of Karnataka.
With 40 million voters going to vote on Saturday's first phase of polls, political pundits are keeping their fingers crossed, as they are not sure of which party emerging winner this time.
Billed as the path breaking polls by analysts due its proximity to the general elections in India in 2009, the election verdict will surely alter the political equation in Delhi. For decades Karnataka's choice has invariably gone against the trend in other states and at the national level. Still the outcome of the election to the 224-member legislature could end up being a pointer to the timing of the next polls for the Indian parliament.
Political analysts believe that if the Congress wins, it will be tempted for an early Lok Sabha election. The Karnataka elections are also the most important after the battle for the Gujarat legislature that was decisively won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for the fourth time in a row, at great cost to the Congress.
The BJP is a rising power in Karnataka. But to its bitter experience with JDS in power sharing row, the party has decided to sit in the opposition in case of fractured verdict. Now with rising food prices upsetting millions, Karnataka will test the popular mood and provide valuable lessons to the Congress and the BJP, the major contenders for power in the state as well as in the national level.
If the BJP wins, it will be the first time it will get to rule a state in southern India. For the Congress, it will have to come to power to prove that Karnataka is not slipping out of its hands. The Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), which has already lost its face due to power-sharing drama it had enacted against BJP, will strive hard to win the confidence of the electorate.
Thus, anything less than close to 100 seats will derail BJP's ambitions. The second phase is scheduled on May 16 is for 66 assembly constituencies and the last phase will held on May 22 ifor 69 constituencies.
So folks, predict the winner: Will it be Congress, BJP or JDS? Or will it be a coalition game of horse-trading?
