New Delhi, April28 (ANI): Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has been banned for the reminder of the domestic Twenty20 league cricket tournament after he was found guilty of slapping compatriot Sreesanth. Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi announced at a news conference in New Delhi today that the cricketer would be fined all of his match fees from the tournament. Under the ICC code of conduct rules,the offence refers to a physical assault and carries a minimum ban of 10 games and a maximum life ban from play.
The BCCI on Monday banned off-spinner Harbhajan Singh for 11 matches of the Indian Premier League. The decision was taken at a hearing by DLF Indian Premier league match referee Farokh Engineer.
Earlier, the Mumbai Indians stand-in captain, was temporarily suspended from the DLF Indian Premier League and missed the Mumbai Indians match on Sunday.
The off-spinner was charged with the violation of a level 4 offence of the ICC player code of conduct. It's a charge that carries it with a ban ranging from ten games to life.
Harbhajan Singh had allegedly slapped Kings XI Punjab pacer S Sreesanth on Friday night.
Farokh Engineer gave his decision based on prima facie video evidence provided by Sony & TWI.
"A decision has been reached to suspend with immediate effect Harbhajan Singh of the Mumbai Indians pending the inquiry into the incident on Monday, April 28th 2008," IPL Commissioner said in a press release.
